Getting what you want in life and business is not just about having vision and goals – great though they are.

In episode 13 of the Changeability Podcast we take a step back from thinking about where you want to get to and what you want to achieve.

We take you back to the all-important starting point, to discover what’s sabotaging your best intentions and desires. To tease out what’s stopping you reaching your potential and getting in the way of positive change in your life or business.

This is the crucial self-development step that most people miss out.  It’s understandable because we’re so keen to be getting on with our goals and actions.

But it’s the key to unlocking the behaviours and characteristics that you need in order to make the changes you want to make in your life.

Without it you’re in danger of repeating the same behaviours and ways of thinking and acting that got you into the situation and position you now want to change – whatever that is, however big or small.

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.”  James Allen

So we’re stepping back to take stock of where you’re starting from. To uncover the hidden reasons and cause behind much of what you do or don’t do, and how you do it.

In today’s episode we’re discovering your limiting thoughts and self-beliefs.

We all have negative thoughts and unhelpful self-beliefs that limit us from doing what we want to do and hinder us achieving our goals. But what are they, how do we get them, why do they matter and how do you find them? That’s what we’re finding out in today’s show.

More specifically, in episode 13 you’ll find out:

  •  Why making changes in life and business is not all about goals, action and motivation.
  • What makes up your starting point and why it matters
  • What are self-beliefs and how they help us
  • How beliefs turn into habits and limiting thoughts
  • A whole load of real limiting thoughts – you might recognise
  • What limiting thought are and where they come from (and a rather worrying dialogue!)
  • It’s not all doom and gloom
  • A way of discovering your limiting thoughts and self-beliefs in a few minutes with just a piece of paper and pen
  • Why you should be vigilant in the next week.

How to set goals that work

"Humans work best when they have a sense of purpose. It doesn't seem to matter what it is, as long as there is one! Without a sense of purpose the Human lacks direction and meaning to life." Dr Steve Peters

Goals help us define what we desire, give us clarity about what we want to achieve and articulate a sense of purpose.

Goals are a way of making our vision and ambitions manageable and achievable.

In setting goals we state our intentions, based on the big picture of how we want our business or life to look.

Goal setting is an excellent mind management technique. Goals give us focus, determine our direction, and create the lens through which we look at business, life and it’s opportunities.

In short, goals help us manage our minds to make changes or improvements in business and life - by helping us cultivate the optimum mindset to take the actions to bring those changes into reality.

But how do we it?  How do we create goals that inspire and motivate us?

In episode 11 of the Changeability Podcast we talk about how to set goals that work.  By which we mean how to set goals you can achieve and you'll want to achieve.

Because there’s ways and means to do it – some popular, some quirky, some downright boring, some wrong (or at least we think they are) and the way we like to do it and probably a lot more besides.

We’re not claiming to have all the answers or the one method that trumps all others – but we do take a look at two different but complementary simple systems for setting goals - that you can put into practice straight away.

Plus there’s some other chitchat about how to set goals that work as well as one way that definitely doesn’t work!

In episode 11 you’ll find out:

  • A bit more about Kathryn and Julian’s acting skills (enough said!)
  • How not to set goals
  • That work objectives and HR driven processes shouldn’t put you off the whole idea of goals
  • Other ways to think about goals
  • The true meaning of desire
  • What SMART goals are and what we think about them
  • How a SMART goal earned Kathryn a special prize
  • How you can get our SMART goal template (hint – see below)
  • How many goals we should focus on at a time
  • Whether writing your goals down makes you more likely to achieve them or not
  • How to share and discuss goals and mind management type stuff in a private exclusive group
  • The five characteristics of goal setting that’s our favourite method for how to set goals that work.

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where” - said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat

“So long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.

(Lewis Carroll from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 1865)

Do you like goals – or does talk of goals make your eyes glaze over and your mind shut off?

Do you set goals in your life or business – or do you think they’re a waste of time and energy?

Have you heard people talking about goals but don’t know what the fuss is about?

In episode 10 of the Changeability Podcast we’re talking all things goals.

We explore the power of goals to help us manage our minds to get the life and business we want. What they are and why they work (or do they?)

How goals take the vision or big picture of what we want (which we talked about in episode 9) and turn it into manageable milestones.

Using the power of goals as a mind management technique is something you don’t want to miss out on if you want to make changes in your life. But not everyone feels the same way - so we look at the potential downside of goal-setting and how to overcome it and use it to our advantage.

Whether you love goals, don’t know anything about them, think they’re totally overrated or are mildly interested in improving your life or business – there’s something in today’s episode for you - on the power of goals.

More specifically in episode 10 you’ll find out about:

  •  What goals are and what they do
  • When goal setting became mainstream
  • What many successful people have in common
  • What’s the point of setting goals
  • Why goals work
  • The power of goals to manage your mind
  • How goals change how you see yourself
  • If goals are going out of favour
  • If setting goals sets you up for failure
  • If goals are good for us
  • How goals are a mind management technique
